Ability Levels and Age Ranges

I currently offer lessons for all ability levels (absolute beginners to advanced learners) and students may start as young as 7 years old through to retired adults.

Violin/Fiddle Lesson Content

I am happy to teach specifically classical violin or folk fiddle/viola where preferred however I am passionate about students learning to be well rounded musicians and many of my students learn the violin as an instrument rather than a specific genre. My aim is for every student to develop a solid understanding of violin technique whilst experiencing a variety of genres.  This gives students the opportunity to specialise in a particular genre at a later stage in their learning when they have a clearer idea of what they enjoy playing.

Depending on ability level, most students will begin lessons using a tutor book to suit their needs. These books work as a step by step guide on how to read music, hold the violin/bow and learn where to put your fingers. Wherever possible I also try to include some of the student's favourite music which could be pop songs or film themes. After all, if someone has chosen to learn an instrument, they should be encouraged to learn the music they enjoy listening to - even if it is initially as an easy duet with a teacher.

Music Theory

Many students opt to learn music theory during their violin/fiddle lessons but I also offer it as a standalone lesson where appropriate. For violin/fiddle students I try to incorporate theory practically so even if a student is not formally completing written workbooks they are still learning some music theory.

Exam Entry

Exams are offered to every student when they reach an appropriate level but exams are entirely optional and they in no way form an essential or obligatory part of lessons.

Lesson Timings

All students are offered a weekly 30 minute lesson however more advanced students, adults or students wishing to focus theory in greater depth may be considered for a weekly hour lesson.  Lessons take place at a regular set time each week however for adults taking lessons in the daytime there may be more flexibility.
